Description of the Product Scrolls were the earliest format used to record longer texts with ink or paint on flexible materials across many ancient literate cultures. The oldest known example is the Diary of Merer, which, based on its contents, dates to around 2568 BCE during the reign of Pharaoh Khufu (also known as Cheops). Scrolls remained in use around the world until the 4th century CE, when they were gradually replaced by codex or bound book. By the 6th century, scrolls had nearly disappeared from use. Today, scrolls are primarily seen in ceremonial or religious contexts. A book scroll could consist of multiple pages joined edge to edge. It was read one section at a time by unrolling from one end while rolling up the other. The earliest scrolls were made of papyrus, later of parchment—thin, treated animal skin—and eventually of paper. Scrolls were written both horizontally and vertically: the horizontal format was called a volumen, while the vertical format was known as a rotulus.
